About the Artist

The Art of the Land

Robert Coppen - Biography

I'm an artist who lives in upstate NY. My primary focus is on painting landscapes, although I occasionally paint wildlife and domestic animals.

My first artwork, which I don't remember creating, is a family legend of sorts. My parents told me that when I was a year-and-a-half old I drew weird-looking birds with pointy teeth that looked a lot like extinct dodo birds all over my crib sheet with a ball-point pen. My mother kept the sheet, and they really did look a lot like dodo birds. My parents guessed that the pen must have fallen out of my father's shirt pocket when he was putting me in my crib. Their guess was probably correct, but it doesn't explain how I knew what dodo birds were and why I thought they had pointy-looking, reptilian teeth. Anyway, ever since I was a little kid I was into nature. I grew up fishing, hiking, birding and canoeing with my father in Central NY, with an occasional foray into the Adirondacks. We also did some hunting together, but mutually decided that hunting for us was just an excuse to walk around in the woods, looking at wildlife, so we decided to give up hunting and just walk around in the woods at around the same time. I still do some hunting, but not with a gun. Now I hunt for landscapes to paint.

I'm self-taught and have worked in a number of mediums, from watercolors to acrylics to pastels. Have recently experimented with oils and alkyds. My artistic heroes are Winslow Homer, Charles Burchfield, John Constable, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper and the wildlife artist, Robert Kuhn, whose work I first became exposed to in my grandfather's old Field & Stream magazines.

For me the medium isn't the message, the subject matter is. You paint what you love, and I love the land around me. I think it's beautiful, and I'd like to see it stay that way. I use different techniques depending on the medium I'm using and what I happen to be painting at the time. But the bottom line is my love of the land, and my fervent hope that it stays beautiful and able to support both people and animals for many years into the future.

Most of the paintings shown here are for sale, just not here, at least not yet. If you see a painting you like, send me an email. If you'd like to see more of my paintings, go to my links page and click on the "Fine Art America" or "Pixels" links (there are about 260 paintings at those sites). If you see something that you like, send me an email (you can buy a print on Pixels and/or Fine Art America if you want). If you'd like to check out some of my smaller paintings, click on the "The Forest And The River" link.

I have a framed original on display at The Selective Eye, a gift shop attached to the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts: 403 Canal Place, Little Falls, NY 13365.
